What is IRPF?
IRPF (Impuesto sobre la Renta de las Personas Físicas) is the Spanish personal income tax. For autonomos it applies to your net profit — revenue after deducting general expenses and Social Security contributions, which become your taxable base (base imponible).
State + regional split
IRPF is split roughly 50/50 between the national government (state) and your autonomous community (region). Each applies its own progressive bracket table independently, so changing your region can significantly affect your total tax bill. Madrid has the lowest regional rates; Valencia, Catalunya and Asturias are among the highest.
Progressive brackets
IRPF is progressive — only the income within each bracket is taxed at that bracket's rate. Earning €1 more never makes your entire income jump to a higher rate. State rates range from 9.5% on the first €12,450 up to 24.5% above €300,000. Regional rates vary by community.
Personal minimum (mínimo personal y familiar)
Spain grants every taxpayer a personal minimum allowance — an amount of income that is effectively tax-free. It works by computing the tax on the allowance and subtracting that from your bill (not by reducing your taxable base). The base allowance is €5,550; it increases with age (65+, 75+), dependent children, cohabiting parents 65+/75+, and disability (including reduced mobility).
Autonomo-specific deductions
Before IRPF is calculated, your taxable base is reduced by:
- General expenses: 7% of revenue (max €2,000) for individual autonomos and 3% for directors — this sets the income bracket for Social Security. For IRPF, a separate 5% flat deduction (max €2,000) applies to everyone.
- Social Security contributions: your full annual SS quota is 100% deductible from the IRPF base.

How autónomo taxes work in Spain
Since 2023, Spanish autónomos pay social security contributions based on their actual net income through a 15-bracket system. On top of SS, autónomos pay IRPF (income tax) on their remaining net income. This calculator estimates both SS contributions and IRPF for any region in Spain.

Frequently Asked Questions
How are autónomo SS quotas calculated?
Since 2023, Spain introduced a 15-bracket social security system for autónomos based on actual net income. Your monthly quota depends on which bracket your estimated annual net income falls into. Official quotas for 2026 are set by Orden PJC/297/2026.
What is tarifa plana?
Tarifa plana is a reduced flat rate of €80/month for newly registered autónomos during their first 12 months. It reduces the initial burden for new self-employed workers. After the first year, you pay the regular quota based on your income bracket.
What deductions can autónomos claim?
For Social Security, individual autónomos deduct 7% of net revenues (capped at €2,000/year) when determining their SS bracket; company directors apply a 3% rate (same cap). For IRPF, everyone deducts a flat 5% allowance for hard-to-justify expenses (capped at €2,000/year). All autónomos also deduct annual SS contributions from income before calculating IRPF.
How is IRPF calculated for autónomos?
IRPF is Spain's income tax. For autónomos, the taxable base is net revenue minus SS contributions minus general expenses, reduced further by the personal minimum allowance. The resulting base is taxed using progressive brackets split between a state component and a regional component set by each community.
Do dependent parents and disability reduce IRPF?
Yes. Each cohabiting parent over 65 (or disabled, any age) adds €1,150 to your personal minimum, plus €1,400 more if over 75 (they must live with you and earn under €8,000/year). Disability adds €3,000 at 33%+ (€6,000 with reduced mobility) and €12,000 at 65%+. Ceuta and Melilla residents pay only 40% of the full IRPF (60% reduction, art. 68.4 LIRPF).
