Income needed for a €300,000 home with 80% mortgage
Buying a €300,000 home in Spain requires a €60,000 down payment plus costs, with an 80% mortgage. The loan covers €240,000, and at a fixed rate of 3% over 25 years the monthly payment is about €1,138. To stay within the Bank of Spain's recommended 30%-35% debt-to-income ratio, buyers need €3,250 to €3,800 in net monthly income. The average home price has reached nearly €3,000 per square meter (€263,160), up 12.5% from 2025.
Spain's new regional financing: €21 billion more, voluntary for regions
The Fiscal and Financial Policy Council is set to approve Spain's new regional financing model on Friday, 12 years after the previous system expired. The reform adds €21 billion and is backed by the central government, Catalonia (PSC and ERC), and the Canary Islands. Regions can join voluntarily or remain under the 2009 system. Madrid has said it will not attend, calling the model "deeply unjust" and "imposed by Catalonia".
Volkswagen approves 50,000 extra job cuts, puts Seat in doubt
Volkswagen's supervisory board has unanimously approved its Future Plan 2030, which could cut around 50,000 additional jobs worldwide. This comes on top of roughly 50,000 jobs already agreed since late 2024 across Volkswagen, Audi, Porsche, and Cariad. Four German plants — Emden, Zwickau, Hannover, and Neckarsulm — face uncertainty. The company must present a reorganization plan for European production by June 2027, leaving Seat's future unclear.
Five overlooked Social Security benefits for families with children
Spain's Social Security offers several benefits that many eligible families fail to claim. A €1,000 tax-free one-time payment is available to single-parent families, large families, and families with a parent who has a disability rating of 65% or more. The income limit for the full amount starts at €15,356 per year for one child. For twins, the benefit is four times the SMI (€4,530); for triplets, eight times (€9,070). Payments range from €1,000 to more than €5,900 per year and must be requested explicitly.
Lawyers: school supply tax deductions require full invoices, not receipts
There is no national tax deduction for back-to-school expenses in Spain. Each of the 15 regions sets its own rules, covering items such as books, materials, transport, canteen, and uniforms. Some regions include childcare for children under three or language and IT classes. Lawyers warn that taxpayers must keep complete, detailed invoices, not just receipts, to claim these deductions.
Lawyer warns of costly errors giving house money to children
Giving money to a child for a home purchase without documenting whether it is a loan or a donation can trigger tax trouble, warns lawyer Iñaki Barredo. Donations are subject to the Inheritance and Gift Tax, with rules varying by region, while family loans are subject to Property Transfer Tax and Documented Legal Acts using Form 600. Barredo says that if a child separates from a partner, an undocumented contribution can be lost completely. "In many cases they lose all the money," he said.
COVID vaccines may help immune system detect tumors, study suggests
mRNA COVID-19 vaccines may help the immune system identify tumors that previously evaded detection, a recent study suggests. The immune system normally eliminates thousands of potentially dangerous mutated cells daily, but tumors escape detection because they originate from the body's own cells. The research highlights how these vaccines could boost the effectiveness of some cancer treatments.
Fuel prices rise up to 24%, near pre-VAT-cut highs
Fuel prices in Spain have climbed for nine consecutive weeks. Diesel is up 24% and gasoline is up 20.4% since July, with average prices at €1.865 and €1.732 per liter respectively. The government ended the VAT cut on June 29 and replaced it with a hydrocarbon tax bonus. As of Sept. 1, the diesel bonus was raised to 20 cents per liter.
Flexible retirement reform: who benefits, according to economist
Spain's flexible retirement reform, in force since Aug. 28, allows pensioners to return to work and combine a salary with part of their pension. Under Royal Decree 416/2026, they can work between 33% and 80% of a full-time schedule while receiving a proportional pension. Economist Begoña Cueto says two or three groups will find the option attractive, particularly those in professions that do not require great physical effort. The measure aims to avoid an abrupt jump from full-time work to full retirement.
Workers can request two years' leave to care for relatives
Under Article 46 of the Workers' Statute, employees with at least one year of seniority can request up to two years of unpaid leave to care for a dependent relative. The leave covers a spouse, a de facto partner, or relatives up to the second degree. The person receiving care must be dependent and must not be in paid work. For children, the leave extends to three years per child, including adoption and fostering. Collective agreements can extend the two-year maximum.
Sánchez: No proof Morocco planned Ceuta entry, but firm response
Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said there was no evidence that Morocco planned or executed the mass migrant entry into Ceuta in late July. He promised to act "with firmness" if proof is verified. The Moroccan ambassador was summoned on Aug. 21. Sánchez described three phases: normal operations before July 30, a 10-hour period on July 30 when the Moroccan Gendarmerie allowed border crossings, and subsequent events.
Ticks spread Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever in Spain
Experts warn that Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever, transmitted by ticks, is spreading in Spain. Four cases were identified this season, including the death of an 84-year-old man in Salamanca. In the last decade, 19 infections were recorded, six of them fatal. The disease was not detected in Spain before 2016. Experts attribute the spread to climate change and illegal livestock trade.
More than 80 dead on a cayuco south of Gran Canaria
A cayuco that left Gambia on Aug. 7 with 128 people was found adrift 120 kilometers south of Gran Canaria after 27 days at sea. Only 44 survivors remained. Five bodies were found on board but could not be recovered due to rough seas. Survivors were taken to Arguineguín dock and assisted by the Red Cross. Arrivals on the Canary Islands route have fallen almost 60% this year.
Sánchez proposes EU ultra-peripheral status for Ceuta
Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has opened a debate in the EU to make Ceuta an "ultra-peripheral region." The status would give the city access to specific aid and financing regimes but would require reform of the EU Treaties. Current ultra-peripheral regions include the Canary Islands, French overseas territories, the Azores, and Madeira. Ceuta would be the first non-island territory in this group.
Spain records hottest temperatures in its history in 2026
The period from January to August 2026 in peninsular Spain is the hottest on record, according to Aemet. The previous four years (2022-2025) were already classified as "extremely warm." Meteorological summer 2026, from June 1 to Aug. 31, is the hottest since 1961. Aemet says the data is an "unmistakable sign" that warming is accelerating.
