Ceuta crisis sparks debate on expulsions and asylum
The mass arrival of 80,000 people in Ceuta on July 30 has pushed Spain toward reforming immigration law to speed up expulsions and border rejections. Ceuta and Melilla presidents demand faster expulsions and a new border protocol, while PP, Vox, and Junts also call for changes. Pedro Sánchez promised to make repatriations more efficient; a Supreme Court ruling bans hot returns of people who enter by swimming without crossing border barriers. The government built a 500-meter maritime barrier at Tarajal and another in Melilla, and a proposed reform would apply border rejection to any illegal entry point, not just fence jumps. Judges' associations reject blanket denial of asylum applications in Ceuta, insisting each case must be studied individually and that irregular entry does not remove the right to request international protection.
